No Apologies!
Having lunch with John Keating last week brought up another issue we talked about. John attends several SAG-sponsored functions intended to help the membership, among them screenings of new films at which the principles speak.
One common thread that both prominent directors and actors spoke about was the tendency of actors to come into auditions projecting that they don’t really deserve to be there. The major way this comes through is by apologizing — not just in words, but in behavior.
What’s that about? We know the people making the decisions are the momentary “powers that be,” but why would they want to work with anyone that doesn’t feel like they deserve to be there? Actors apologize all over the place — sometimes it happens because they made a mistake — but at an audition, are we expected to bring in a polished performance? We do need to polish our auditioning approach, but the work itself is going to have to be one made through exploration and risk and through committed choices. It’s hard to commit when you’re apologizing.
